A couple weeks ago in America and Canada was a special day called Labor Day. Labor Day is when people show their appreciation for essential workers such as builders and teachers. This got me thinking, why do we celebrate them? Well, because of the effort they put into their jobs. Effort is the backbone of Labor Day. Welcome to episode 17 of Talking About Topics. A podcast where we discuss and compare important topics using both earthly and Christian viewpoints every Monday. Sorry I've been missing a whole lot of weeks.
Uh I was busy and forgot, and so I'm releasing one today and this Monday should also have an episode. This week's topic is effort. First of all, what exactly is effort? Well, Merriam Webster's dictionary describes effort as active or applied force. So basically putting a lot of work into something. The world's use of this word widely ranges from laziness, which is the absence of effort, to a hard working nature, which is when effort is put ahead of personal gain and desire. I have noticed though in some countries, laziness has grown immensely.
This is mainly because of new inventions in tech that takes over hard tasks. It has inspired laziness upon part of the world. Honestly, we should not let this affect us. Just because tech can take over hard work does not mean we should let it. Other places, however, do not have the tech like America and Japan do, and are stuck with working in order to thrive. Another thing I've noticed is that hardworking people, individuals who put effort into their work, are usually more humble and have more self-discipline than most lazy people.
This makes sense since hard workers learn discipline while working. So what's the Bible viewpoint on effort? Well, in the Bible, Ecclesiastes nine verses nine through ten says, Live happily with the woman you love through all the meaningless days of life that God has given you under the sun. The wife God gives you is your reward for all of your earthly toil. Whatever you do, do well, for when you go to the grave there will be no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom. As you can see, God wants us to work on some things with all of our might.
This means effort is required. If you are working, do it the best you can. But what's the outcome? Why should we even listen to this command? This is explained in Philippians two verses fourteen through fifteen. Do everything without complaining and arguing, so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people.
This is why we are lights of Christ and we must show goodness, and effort is a way to do it. When people see Christians obeying Christ's orders with effort, they are inspired to do the same. We could show an entire generation what effort does and have multitudes of Christians obeying God to the fullest. Effort also shows God that we love Him. Colossians three sixteen and seventeen says Let the message about Christ in all its richness fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom that he gives.
Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father. Because of what God's done for us, we thank him. And we thank him by praising him with effort and by doing everything we do with effort in light of him. We love him and we should show it. Thank you for listening to episode seventeen of Talking About Topics. I hope you enjoyed.
